Sanctioned Russian Official Praised at White House Co-Chairs Organization Promoting Kremlin Interests Abroad
Yana Lantratova is listed among the leaders of a Russian public-diplomacy organization whose members include prominent Russian political figures and American commentators.
As ONEST reported Thursday, First Lady Melania Trump publicly thanked Russian official Yana Lantratova for her involvement in the humanitarian evacuation of civilians from Russian-occupied Oleshky, Ukraine.
Lantratova has been under U.S. sanctions since 2022. Ukrainian authorities also accuse her of involvement in the forced transfer of Ukrainian children to Russia.
She holds another position: co-chair of the International Club of National Unity, an organization whose stated objectives include advancing Russia's interests internationally.
The club's official website lists Lantratova as one of its four co-chairs, alongside former Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov, who served under pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych, and Russian political figures Alexander Kazakov and Andrei Klintsevich.
Its membership materials identify Russian nationalist ideologue Alexander Dugin, Chechen military commander Apti Alaudinov and former CIA analyst Larry Johnson, among others.
The organization's published materials also feature American commentators Scott Ritter and other Western figures.
The club describes itself as a platform for public diplomacy, operating in support of Russian state policies on traditional values and international engagement.
It explicitly identifies promoting Russian interests as part of its mission.
The Vatican's role
Meanwhile, the Vatican has provided further context about the Oleshky evacuation.
Pope Leo XIV had personally intervened to secure a humanitarian ceasefire, according to Vatican News. The Holy See also acknowledged Melania Trump's contribution to the operation. The evacuation allowed hundreds of civilians to leave Russian-occupied territory.
At Thursday's White House ceremony, Kremlin envoy Kirill Dmitriev praised Vladimir Putin's support for the humanitarian initiative, while Lantratova received recognition for her work.
Humanitarian diplomacy, Russian-style
The Oleshky evacuation was a humanitarian achievement. Pope Leo XIV personally appealed to Putin to allow it, while Melania Trump helped broker the agreement.
At the White House, however, Kremlin envoy Kirill Dmitriev praised Putin's peace efforts, while Yana Lantratova, Russia's federal Commissioner for Human Rights, received public thanks.
Lantratova remains under U.S. sanctions and faces Ukrainian allegations of involvement in the forced transfer of children from occupied territories. She represents a government responsible for widespread human rights abuses, both at home and in Ukraine.
The White House's account made no mention of the Pope's contribution.
Negotiating with Russian officials to save civilian lives is one thing. Welcoming them into the White House and publicly celebrating their humanitarian credentials is quite another.
A sanctioned Russian official, accused of involvement in serious violations against Ukrainian children and actively involved in promoting Russian state interests abroad, was welcomed into the seat of American power — and honored for her humanitarian work.
This is no longer simply a question of diplomatic engagement.
It is a question of whom the United States is choosing to legitimize — and why.
