🎨 Art That Moves Us

I visited a remarkable exhibition by French sculptor Bruno Catalano, titled Travellers, currently on display in NYC.

Its beauty goes far beyond the exceptional craftsmanship; it delves into the psyche of anyone who has ever dared to leave home in search of growth and discovery. Some embark on this journey out of inspiration, others out of necessity — yet the emptiness within remains, until it is slowly filled with the new.

«HUBERT III»

312 x 80 x 100 cm

Original Bronze

A metaphor for humanity, “HUBERT III” symbolizing the moments of doubt and questioning that every traveller has gone through. He invites us to stop for a few minutes before setting off again, stronger and more sure of the road ahead…

«BENOÎT»

330 x 110 x110 cm

Original Bronze

“BENOÎT” is a friend and collaborator of Bruno Catalano’s foundry. What he’s carrying in his suitcase is the journey of his life, the heartbreak, what he’s left behind. On the move, on the move, he doesn’t let the trials of life, exile and detachment stop him…

«BLEU DE CHINE»

300 x 110 x110 cm

Original Bronze

“BLEU DE CHINE” is a dedication to all those people who arrived in Marseille to work. It’s also a tribute to the welcoming land that is this city, with its port at its epicenter. From this sculpture emanates a story that speaks to all Marseillais, especially the dockworkers, of whom Bruno Catalano was one.

«J4»

304 x 120 x 120 cm

Original Bronze

“J4” is Bruno Catalano’s first monumental artwork. It is named after a quay in the Joliette district of Marseille, the sculptor’s heartland.

«KHADINE»

305 x 110 x 110 cm

Original Bronze

The man pictured here is a recurring character in the ‘Voyageurs’ series. He is also a fellow traveler, friend and model of Bruno Catalano. “KHADINE” strides forward with a suitcase in hand. From his tall stature, he seems to observe a distant horizon, indiscernible to us. Echoing the journey of this Senegalese man, torn between two countries and two continents, the work opens on the African diaspora’s questioning of its past and its heritage in the globalized world.

«L’ÉTTOFE DES HÉROS»

300 x 100 x 110 cm

Original Bronze

“L’ÉTTOFE DES HÉROS” has a special status. This faceless work presents two contrasting facets: on the one hand, the darkness of war, and on the other, exploit, a taste for adventure and a certain attraction to danger. “L’ÉTTOFE DES HÉROS” is thus the Traveller par excellence.

«PIERRE DAVID»

300 x 105 x 105 cm

Original Bronze

Bruno Catalano depicts human beings torn apart, crossed by a great emptiness that evokes the scars of departures and separations, and identities fragmented by hardship.“PIERRE DAVID” represents a colleague from the foundry with whom the sculptor has worked for many years.

«VAN GOGH»

430 x 120 x 120 cm

Original Bronze

“VAN GOGH” is a veritable figurehead for Bruno Catalano. This “Traveller” wears a canvas on his back, and stands as an edifying paradigm of an aptitude for renunciation. Bruno Catalano, having himself given up everything to devote himself exclusively to art, can only, without pretension, see in it a mirror.

«VOYAGE À NEW YORK»

315 x 100 x 100 cm

Original & Mirror Polish Bronze

“VOYAGE À NEW YORK” does not appear to be torn apart from the inside, but rather to be in transit to another reality: it enters or exits a parallel space-time where its silhouette fades in and out of view. Acting as a mirror or screen, the sculpture welcomes the reflection of the surrounding scenery, as if it were part of itself.

To truly experience the depth and emotion of Bruno Catalano’s Travellers, I captured a short video of the sculptures in motion — because sometimes, still photos just aren't enough.

🌟 Breakthroughs & Hope

Groundbreaking Trial Offers Hope for Adults with Peanut Allergies

A pioneering clinical trial has shown promising results in desensitizing adults with peanut allergies. The study, the first of its kind focused exclusively on adults, involved 21 participants who were gradually introduced to small amounts of peanut flour, eventually increasing to whole peanuts. By the end of the trial, 67% of participants could consume the equivalent of five peanuts without any allergic reaction.

Breakthrough Superbug-Killing Paint Developed by Scientists

Researchers at the University of Nottingham have developed a revolutionary paint that could significantly reduce bacterial contamination in hospitals. The paint incorporates chlorhexidine, a disinfectant commonly used for mouth infections and pre-surgical cleaning, and has been proven effective against tough bacteria and viruses, including MRSA, flu, and COVID-19. Dr. Felicity de Cogan, who led the study, highlighted the paint's "excellent efficacy" and noted that it does not leach into the environment or spread when touched. The paint can be applied to plastic and other non-porous surfaces, offering an antimicrobial coating that could greatly enhance hygiene in medical settings. The study's results were published in Nature.

💛 Heartwarming Moments

At the Vatican this week, something extraordinary happened.

French nun Sister Genevieve Jeanningros — a close friend of Pope Francis — was allowed to break tradition and stand among Catholic leadership as she mourned him, honoring a bond that transcended titles.

Meanwhile, in Vatican Square, a surreal moment unfolded: birds soared above St. Peter’s Basilica, mirroring the lifted hearts of thousands waiting in solemn queues to say goodbye.

A truly powerful AI-generated video captures Pope Francis through the years — take a look:

🎨 Special Feature: Pope Francis' Favorite Painting

Pope Francis often spoke about one particular painting that moved him deeply: Caravaggio’s “The Calling of St. Matthew”.

The painting hangs in a small chapel near where Pope Francis would often stay before becoming pope. It depicts Matthew — the tax collector — being called by Jesus.

Francis said:

“It is the gesture of Matthew that strikes me. This is what I said when they asked me if I would accept my election as pontiff.”

In the painting, Matthew points to himself in disbelief, almost asking, "Me?" Francis saw his own calling mirrored in that hesitation — the feeling of being chosen for something far beyond his own expectation.

🐘 Curiously True

Bear's Playtime: Unlikely Visitor Slides Down Family's Playset in Connecticut

Sarah Loving of Simsbury, Connecticut, was surprised to find two bears walking across her backyard last Saturday. While bears are common in the area, she was astonished when one of the bears climbed onto her children’s wooden playset and slid down the slide head first. After taking a brief break, the bears wandered off to the neighbor’s yard. Loving shared that it was the first time she had ever seen a bear using the playset, joking that the bears seemed familiar with the equipment. The entire encounter lasted about 10 minutes.

Harmonica-Playing Seniors Return to Perform National Anthem for LA Kings' Playoff Game

The Los Angeles Kings invited the Harmonica Class from the Koreatown Senior and Community Center back to perform the U.S. national anthem before Game 2 of their first-round Stanley Cup playoff series against the Edmonton Oilers. The group gained viral fame after their touching rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" before Game 1, which had fans enthusiastically singing along. For their second appearance, the seniors wore black Kings jerseys, earning loud cheers from the crowd. Their performance may even be a good luck charm, as the Kings won 6-5 in a thrilling Game 1. The Koreatown area, home to the nation’s largest Korean American population, is just a few miles from downtown Los Angeles.

Elephants at San Diego Zoo Safari Park Form Protective Circle During Earthquake

A 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck San Diego on Monday, prompting a herd of African elephants at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park to instinctively protect their young. A video showed the elephants scattering in different directions before the older matriarchs — Ndlula, Umngani, and Khosi — quickly encircled the two calves, Zuli and Mkhaya, shielding them from potential danger. The elephants remained huddled for several minutes, with the adults keeping a vigilant watch even after the tremors stopped. Elephants, known for their intelligence and strong social bonds, can feel vibrations through their feet and often form an "alert circle" to protect the group. Zuli, the younger calf, was comforted by Khosi, who repeatedly tapped him with her trunk, while Mkhaya, the male calf, stood at the edge of the circle showing courage. The herd briefly huddled again after an aftershock before dispersing once they felt safe. Mindy Albright, a curator at the park, praised the elephants' protective behavior, saying it exemplified the care parents provide for their children.
