About the G7 Summit

The G7 (Group of Seven) is an annual gathering of the world’s seven most advanced economies: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The 2025 G7 Leaders’ Summit will take place June 15–17 in Kananaskis, Alberta, Canada.

This summit will address global challenges including democratic resilience, climate action, economic stability, AI governance, public health, and international security.

A Brief History of the G7

 

The G7 originated in the early 1970s as an informal forum for the leaders of major industrialized nations to discuss economic policy and global cooperation. It began with the G6 summit in 1975, hosted by France, with the original members being France, West Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Canada joined the following year in 1976, forming the G7.

Over time, the G7 expanded its focus beyond economic issues to address global security, climate change, health crises, and development challenges. While Russia was added in 1997 to form the G8, its membership was suspended in 2014 following the annexation of Crimea.

Today, the G7 remains a key platform for open dialogue and coordinated action among democratic nations facing shared global challenges.
