The U.S. Air Force has deployed B-52 Stratofortress bombers to the Middle East for the first time since 2019, as part of efforts to deter Iran and its proxies, the military announced on November 3. Six B-52s, along with an additional squadron of F-15E Strike Eagles and aerial refueling tankers, are being sent to bolster U.S. airpower in the region.

This deployment aims to compensate for the impending withdrawal of the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group. It comes in response to threats from Iranian officials following recent Israeli airstrikes on Iranian military facilities.

Pentagon Press Secretary Air Force Maj. Gen. Patrick S. Ryder emphasized that these movements illustrate the U.S. military's flexibility to respond to evolving national security threats. While the specific base for the B-52s has not been disclosed, aircraft from Minot Air Base, North Dakota, have recently arrived at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, the largest U.S. base in the region.

In addition to the bombers, Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III has ordered more missile defense-capable destroyers to the Middle East, as the Lincoln battlegroup, equipped for ballistic missile defense, prepares to leave. Recent U.S. military actions also include deploying a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system to Israel and positioning over 2,000 Marines in the eastern Mediterranean.

These strategic deployments underscore the U.S. commitment to protect its citizens and interests in the Middle East, defend Israel, and pursue de-escalation through deterrence. Ryder stated that any threats to U.S. personnel or interests by Iran or its allies would be met with a strong defense response.
