Secretary of the Air Force Discusses Strategic Goals and Responds to Elon Musk’s Criticism

Secretary of the Air Force Frank Kendall provided insights into the current state of the Air Force and offered advice for incoming leadership.

Secretary of the Air Force Frank Kendall

Defending the F-35 Program

During the session, Kendall addressed recent comments by Elon Musk, who labeled the F-35 program as 'inefficient.' Kendall firmly defended the investment in the production of these planes, citing their critical role in recent operations. He highlighted that, just this week, U.S. Air Force jets—not drones—were successfully deployed to target and eliminate ISIS military positions in Syria. While expressing respect for Musk’s engineering expertise, Kendall remarked, “He would need to learn the ‘Pentagon business’ first before making controversial comments.”

Preparing for Global Threats

Reflecting on his tenure, Kendall shared a pivotal moment from when he first assumed office. He had asked which war the Air Force should be prepared to fight. The response: a potential invasion by China, or possibly Russia. Guided by this answer, Kendall prioritized training and preparation to counter such threats.

He acknowledged that the war in Ukraine influenced the Air Force’s goals, specifically focusing on preventing invasions akin to Russia’s actions in Ukraine from occurring in any NATO country. However, Kendall noted the Air Force’s relatively small size as a limitation, emphasizing the need for expansion to strengthen capabilities.

Advice for Incoming Leadership

When asked about advice for the next administration and his successor, Kendall emphasized the importance of experience. He urged new leaders to seek guidance from the seasoned men and women of the Air Force, who possess invaluable expertise and knowledge. He said that the Pentagon will follow the policies of any administration, but those without sufficient experience should rely on the wisdom of their teams.

Musk’s Vision for the Air Force

Later in the day, a video surfaced of Elon Musk addressing Air Force personnel. In it, Musk encouraged them to 'fight like hell to make the future great.' Notably, Musk has neither been nominated nor elected, yet he appears to involve himself in various aspects of government—even before Trump assumes office.

The contrast between Musk’s rhetoric and Kendall’s practical, strategy-driven remarks highlights a shift in perspectives on leadership and innovation within the armed forces.

This session with the Secretary of the Air Force provided a glimpse into the challenges and opportunities ahead for the Air Force, as it seeks to balance pragmatic military preparedness with bold, forward-looking visions for the future.
