Israel Weighs Ceasefire Proposal as Gaza Offensive Plans Advance

ree

Israel is currently reviewing a Hamas-approved ceasefire proposal for Gaza, even as it prepares for a major new offensive in the region. The draft plan—mediated by Egypt and Qatar—outlines a phased process to exchange hostages and prisoners and increase humanitarian aid to the besieged territory.

According to Qatari officials, the proposed truce is nearly identical to a version previously backed by the United States under the Biden administration and supported by Israel. Under the plan, Hamas would return ten living Israeli hostages and the remains of eighteen others over a 60-day period. In exchange, Israel would release 150 Palestinian detainees.

The proposal also includes critical humanitarian measures. The Israeli military would partially withdraw to a buffer zone approximately half a mile wide along Gaza's northern and eastern borders. Aid distribution would be facilitated by the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross. Talks for a permanent ceasefire would begin once these initial conditions are implemented.

Despite ongoing negotiations, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has approved the call-up of 60,000 reservists in preparation for an invasion of Gaza City, the enclave's largest population center. The impending military operation is expected to displace up to one million Palestinians, exacerbating the already dire humanitarian crisis.

International concern is mounting over the offensive. Human rights groups and foreign governments have criticized Israel’s approach, citing potential violations of international law and worsening conditions for civilians. Gaza’s health ministry reported 266 deaths from famine and malnutrition, while local civil defense officials said 48 Palestinians were killed in Israeli attacks on Tuesday alone.

The situation remains highly fluid as both diplomatic and military strategies unfold in parallel.
