Global Leaders Reaffirm Support for Ukraine Ahead of U.S.-Russia Ceasefire Talks

Prime Minister Mark Carney joined a virtual meeting of the Coalition of the Willing to discuss support for Ukraine, ahead of ceasefire negotiations between the U.S. and Russia scheduled for August 15, 2025, in Anchorage, Alaska. The coalition praised U.S. leadership and emphasized that Ukraine’s future must be determined by Ukrainians. Leaders reaffirmed principles including respect for international borders, the necessity of military and economic pressure on Russia, and the need for strong security guarantees for Ukraine. Carney confirmed Canada’s ongoing support with $2 billion in military aid and a $2.3 billion loan.

The meeting was co-chaired by UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, with participation from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. Vice President JD Vance.
