QUICK ACTUAL NEWS

  • NATO will launch a major exercise at the end of the month to test allied air forces’ ability to operate in a contested environment, officials announced on March 24.

  • U.S. President Trump has signed an Executive Order to impose a 25% tariff on all automobiles beginning April 2nd. These tariffs come in addition to already imposed tariffs.

  • President Trump also announced additional tariffs on pharmaceuticals to be introduced soon.

  • Prime Minister Mark Carney and U.S. President Donald Trump had a constructive discussion on the Canada-U.S. relationship. They agreed to begin comprehensive economic and security negotiations after the election, while trade and intergovernmental officials from both countries will engage in intensified talks to address immediate concerns. Carney stated he would focus on earning the mandate to represent Canada in these discussions and informed Trump that Canada would impose retaliatory tariffs in response to new U.S. trade actions announced on April 2, 2025.

  • U.S. President Trump said on Thursday that larger tariffs could be placed on the European Union and Canada if they both work together "to do economic harm to the USA".

  • Prime Minister Mark Carney met virtually with provincial and territorial premiers to discuss Canada’s response to the U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods, including newly announced tariffs on automobiles and auto parts. Joined by Minister Dominic LeBlanc, Carney emphasized Canada’s united stance against these measures and commitment to defending businesses, workers, and families. He updated the premiers on his conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump and discussed strategies to strengthen Canada’s economy, including unlocking economic projects and removing interprovincial trade barriers. Carney pledged to continue meeting with the premiers in the coming weeks.

Impact of US’ Harassment of Canada on Tourism and Economy

Amid escalating tensions between Canada and the US, triggered by President Trump's tariff threats and comments about Canada “potentially becoming the 51st state”, many Canadians are reconsidering travel to the US.

Data shows a 13% drop in return flights from Canada to the US and a significant portion of Canadians, around 50%, are less likely to visit this year compared to last. The decline is partly driven by (for now) the strong US dollar, making travel more expensive.

The reduction in Canadian tourism poses a serious economic threat to US businesses, potentially costing the economy $2 billion and thousands of jobs. US-bound international travel, in general, is expected to decline by 5% this year due to trade war concerns, impacting tourist spending by an estimated $18 billion.

Additionally, growing visa issues and concerns about detention at the border or upon arrival in the US have further dampened international tourism to the US.

Despite airline schedule changes and capacity being redirected to other markets, a more troubling trend emerges from forward demand data: future flight bookings between Canada and the US have collapsed.

How to Identify Canadian Products - Look for the "Made in Canada" Label

Products labeled as "Made in Canada" must meet specific criteria:

  • A substantial transformation of the product must occur in Canada. This means that ingredients or components are combined to create a new product. For example, eggs, sugar, and butter undergo a substantial transformation when made into cookies.

  • At least 51% of the total manufacturing costs must be incurred in Canada, even if some ingredients or materials are sourced from other countries.

Understanding "Made in Canada" Labels with Qualifiers

Some products may include qualifiers to indicate that certain ingredients are imported while the processing takes place in Canada. Common qualifiers include:

  • Distilled in Canada

  • Refined in Canada

  • Packaged in Canada

  • Processed in Canada

Tip: Look for 100% Canadian Claims

If a product is labeled 100% Canadian, this means that all ingredients, processing, and labor are sourced from Canada.
