Traditional media spends enormous amounts of time documenting people in power.
Presidents. Prime ministers. Generals. Officials. Institutions.
But as I wrote in my recent Editor’s Note, democracy itself is built from two ideas: dēmos — the people, and kratos — power.

With People Behind the Moment, I want to spend much more time documenting dēmos — you.
People Behind the Moment is a new ONEST series created to do exactly that.
Regular people. Different professions. Different ages. Different backgrounds. Different lives.
People whose work may never become a headline, but whose skills, values, choices and humanity shape the world around us every single day.

This is where you come in.
I want to build a movement that documents real people through what they do, what they value and the moments that stay with them.
Not celebrities. Not only people in power. Us.
The people who make up dēmos.
The idea is simple: show up, answer three short questions, and let us introduce you to the ONEST audience through your work, your values and your perspective.
You do not need to be famous.
You do not need to have an unusual job.
You do not need to represent your employer or speak for anyone else.
You just need to be willing to show us who you are.
And we are beginning in New York City for one very practical reason:
I am here.
This is where I can start meeting people, filming conversations and building the first chapter of what I hope will eventually grow far beyond one city.
New York is the beginning.
Then, if we build this together, we keep going — neighborhood by neighborhood, city by city, state by state, country by country.
The ambition is simple:
to create one of the largest collections of real people, across professions, ages, backgrounds and places, telling us who they are through their work and their values.
